‘The fact that you’re alive is a miracle. There are times when some try to pull Hamilton back from his self-obsession. In ‘That Would be Enough ’, his wife Eliza tries to remind him not to focus on his legacy at the expense of living in the moment with his family: When Hamilton pleads: ‘Why do you have to say goodbye?’, Washington replies: ‘If I say goodbye the nation learns to move on, it outlives me when I’m gone.’ A choice between legacy and love Later, as the older and wiser George Washington prepares to end his tenure as president in ‘One Last Time’, he explains to Hamilton that he’s stepping down for the good of one part of his legacy - the United States of America. Miranda says about these lines: ‘In a song about legacy, we begin with Hamilton and Burr bitching about how the guy who doesn’t even survive the war gets a street named after him, while they’re still alive and hustling.’ It sounds like Burr and Hamilton might actually be jealous of the dead man, just because of a street name. ‘That’s a lot less work’, Hamilton quips back. ‘The Mercer legacy is secure’, Burr says. ‘The Room Where it Happens’ starts with Burr and Hamilton discussing how a nearby street has been renamed Mercer Street in honour of General Mercer, who was killed in the revolutionary war: An obsession with legacy is one of the many things Hamilton and Burr have in common. Hamilton isn’t the only character who has a legacy on his mind. We have to make this moment last, that's plenty.’ See, I never thought I'd live past twentyĪsk anybody why we livin' fast and we laugh, reach for a flask If I see it comin', do I run or do I let it be? ‘I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory In a moment of quiet in ‘My Shot’, Hamilton sings: According to Miranda, there’s plenty of scope for an autobiographical interpretation of death’s haunting presence. It’s clear that Hamilton is acutely aware of his mortality, and it’s a key driving force behind his ambition. I will lay down my life if it sets us freeĮventually, you’ll see my ascendancy’ ‘The ticking clock of mortality is loud in both our ears, and it sets us to work’ ‘Don’t be shocked when your history book mentions me Over and over again, he declares: ‘I am not throwing away my shot!’ Anthony Lee Medina assumed the role from Jordan Fisher on March 7, 2017.Perhaps this trauma is one of the reasons why, two songs later, the newly-arrived New Yorker Hamilton blasts out his big intention for his new life.Jordan Fisher assumed the role from Anthony Ramos on November 22, 2016.The duel results in a misfire and Philip is fatally shot by his opponent (" Blow Us All Away").Īs he is on his deathbed, he is surrounded by his mother and father, where he is seen saying his last goodbyes before his death (" Stay Alive (Reprise)"). Before the duel, he seeks advice from his father, who tells him to fire his gun into the air, throwing away his shot. Philip, not having it, confronts Eacker, challenging him to a duel. Soon thereafter, he comes across a man by the name of George Eacker who has been putting down Philip's father in public. Years pass, and Philip graduates King's College in 1801 at the age of 19. He is seen being taunted by Jefferson, Madison, and Burr while reading the pamphlet, walking away gloomily after. Philip is, once again, briefly seen in " The Reynolds Pamphlet". Philip is also briefly seen in " One Last Time", where he stands by Alexander and Eliza as George Washington finishes off the song. Philip is briefly seen when his grandfather Philip Schuyler was overtaken of his seat in the Senate by Aaron Burr, and exclaims his surprise, wondering if his father knew yet, which Alexander did (" Schuyler Defeated"). After Hamilton says that he cannot accompany the family on their trip upstate, Philip travels with Eliza and his aunt Angelica Schuyler (" Take A Break"). At dinner on his ninth birthday, Philip presents to Alexander a short poem he composed himself, briefly reciting numbers in French that he learned from his mother that impresses his father immensely. Phillip doesn't appear in Act One, though does mention that he is Eliza and Alexander's Son ( "That Would Be Enough").Īlexander decides to work at home for some time so he can see his son for the first time since he has grown up. Hamilton sings of his love for his new born son and the life he hopes to provide for Philip (" Dear Theodosia"). Philip Hamilton was born to Elizabeth "Eliza" Schuyler Hamilton and Alexander Hamilton on January 22, 1782.
